Mad Titan ultimately proved victorious against the gathered Avengers and wiped out half of the universe’s sentient beings with the snap of his fingers.
While comic books have the luxury of wiping out any number of characters only to bring them back to life many issues or pages later, Marvel Studios has to deal with flesh-and-blood human beings inhabiting superheroic roles, contractual obligations, and the need to keep churning out movies in the MCU for years to come.
keeping that in mind, we broke down some possible resolutions following the insane cliffhanger at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, taking into account how Ant-man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel will factor into the story and lead into Avengers 4 should they follow some established comic book storylines. The Russos certainly like to pick and choose their comic book lore to use in their live-action mega-movies, so it’s conceivable that almost anything could happen in the movies ahead, however, we’ve taken a look at some of the most likely options.
The Dead Stay Dead
Some of these characters may be well and truly dead since they met their mortal end by means other than Thanos’ finger-snapping control over the Infinity Stones (like Loki, Heimdall, Gamora, the Black Order, and possibly the Collector and Vision), the ones who were “dusted” are the curious characters in this case.
Future features already scheduled for such franchise characters as Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, this “dead stay dead” track is the least likely outcome going into Avengers 4.
Explaining That Strange Choice- Why he gave the stone to Thanos
After their initial plan to separate Thanos from the infinity gauntlet is ruined by a grieving Peter Quill. Thanos easily takes down all of the heroes and is about to strike the killing blow against Tony Stark when Stephen Strange offers Thanos the time stone in exchange for sparing Tony’s life. But why would he make such a huge sacrifice, after previously warning Tony that protecting the stone is his only priority?
For the answer, we have to rewind a bit to before Thanos shows up when we see Doctor Strange looking ahead to see “all the possible outcomes” of their battle with the Mad Titan. Out of millions of potential scenarios, Stephen tells Tony that they only win in one and when the fight ends then strange says that it was the only way. Which clearly show that strange already seen this through.
While we don’t know what Stephen sees, it’s a safe bet that the key to defeating Thanos relies on Tony being alive for some reason, even if that means the Sorcerer Supreme has to sacrifice himself (and billions of others) to give Tony and the other surviving Avengers a fighting chance somewhere down the line. All the real Avengers are still alive. There is a possibility of winning this war and go back in time to save half of the heroes and peoples that are died.
